DIGISPORT organizes a new scientific lunch !

This time we welcome Edmond S. L. Ho !

Edmond S. L. Ho is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing Science (IDA-Section) at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Prior to joining the University of Glasgow in 2022, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (2016-2022) and a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (2011-2016). He has been an Associate Editor of Computer Graphics Forum (CGF) since 2023. He received the BSc degree in Computer Science from the Hong Kong Baptist University, the MPhil degree from the City University of Hong Kong, and the PhD degree from the University of Edinburgh.

Edmond will talk about Predicting Neurological Disorders from 2D and 3D Skeletal Motion Data.
Automating the prediction and classification of neurological disorders leads to a wide range of benefits, including time and cost savings for both the clinicians and patients/carers, reducing the risk of human error and subjectivity in the assessment, as well as supporting remote assessment to minimize the geographical barriers for providing timely healthcare support.

In this talk, a wide range of our team’s ongoing research on human motion analysis, from 2D and 3D motion data, for predicting and classifying neurological disorders will be presented. In particular, our methods are mostly focused on using machine learning techniques for analysing skeletal motion data extracted from vision-based sensors. We further enhanced the interpretability of the proposed models with intuitive visualization.

DIGISPORT launches its scientific lunch series ! First speaker: Cathy Craig

Starting Thursday, December 12, 2024, you can join us for the first DIGISPORT scientific lunch (webinar), live on our LinkedIn page.

The goal is to offer insightful talks during your lunch break on topics at the intersection of sports and digital technology.

For this inaugural scientific lunch, we are honored to welcome Cathy Craig as our guest speaker.

Cathy Craig is a professor of experimental Psychology at Ulster University. With over 20 years’ research experience in performance psychology and >100 scientific publications, she is a recognized ‘thought leader’ in the use of Virtual reality to understand and improve performance in sport. She is co-founder and CEO of INCISIV., a pioneering virtual reality (VR) games company that specializes in the development of VR applications that improve performance through the power of play. With a strong focus on embedding deep scientific know-how into its products (CleanSheet, DodgeCraft, MOVIR), INCISIV has rapidly established itself as a leading force in the interactive, VR sports/fitness sector.

This talk explores how Virtual Reality (VR) is transforming the study and enhancement of performance in sport. Starting with early applications in the 2000s, Cathy will show how carefully controlling what the brain sees and measuring how it responds, provides key insights into human behaviour. She will demonstrate how research using VR can help us understand how expert and novice athletes ‘think’ differently but will also show how VR can be used to understand and improve health outcomes. She will explain how advances in VR hardware and software have allowed her to make her research a reality, with exciting new VR apps, available on the Meta Quest store, that can train perceptuo-motor skills and monitor neural fitness. Finally, she will discuss the future of VR and the Metaverse, highlighting emerging opportunities for researchers and practitioners to harness the power of this technology.

Winter School DIGISPORT in pictures

From November 25 to November 27, 2024, the first edition of the DIGISPORT Winter School took place, focusing on the use of motion capture in real-world scenarios to optimize athletic performance.

Over the course of these three days, PhD students, researchers, and sportech professionals attended conferences and workshops while exchanging ideas about the future of sports and innovation.

On Monday, November 25, Silvia Fantozzi (University of Bologna) and Nicolas Bideau (M2S Laboratory) shared their expertise on motion analysis in swimming. In the afternoon, Antoine Bouvet led a workshop at the Bréquigny pool on using IMUs to analyze swimmers’ movements. The day concluded with a convivial gala evening.

On Tuesday, November 26, Steffi Colyer (University of Bath) presented her research on markerless motion capture, and Antoine Falisse (Stanford University) demonstrated the OpenCap tool for analyzing movements through videos. In the afternoon, Victor Restrat conducted a workshop at the Robert Poirier stadium, combining IMUs and markerless video capture for pole vault biomechanics. The day ended with a cocktail reception and a stimulating poster session.

On Wednesday, November 27, Victor Dequidt and Benjamin Niay showcased the use of OCHY for biomechanical analysis of running via smartphones. Guillaume Saulière (INSEP) and Alexandre Schortgen (Inria) presented the PerfAnalytics project, comparing motion analysis methods for mechanical power estimation. The morning wrapped up with acknowledgments and a festive banquet, bringing the first DIGISPORT Winter School to a close.

We are confident this event will inspire exciting new ideas and collaborations for the future.

WINTER SCHOOL DIGISPORT : SPEAKERS ANNOUNCEMENT

Victor Dequidt, co-founder and CTO of OCHY and Benjamin Niay, PhD in Computer Science will present how OCHY is using computer vision, AI and biomechanics in the running industry.

They will then present the use of their AI system in collecting and interpreting biomechanical data in running, to produce a biomechanical analysis accessible to everyone using smartphone recordings.

WINTER SCHOOL DIGISPORT : SPEAKERS ANNOUNCEMENT

Guillaume Saulière, a biostatistics researcher at INSEP, and Alexandre Schortgen, a PhD student in computer science at INRIA, will present the priority research project PerfAnalytics, funded by the National Research Agency. This presentation will highlight the main results of the project, illustrated with application examples from various Olympic and Paralympic sports.

In the second part, the markerless motion analysis methods developed by PerfAnalytics will be showcased through an athletic profiling case study. A video-based estimation of mechanical power produced during counter movement jumps will be compared with results measured by force platforms.

RETURN IN PICTURES ON THE OPEN INNOVATION CAMP

This Thursday, November 14, the Open Innovation Camp organized by the Pôle Images & Réseaux took place at Roazhon Park.

DIGISPORT was present to showcase the REVEA project in collaboration with the M2S Laboratory, focusing on virtual reality (VR) boxing practice.

Richard Kulpa, co-leader of the DIGISPORT EUR, also delivered a conference on the use of digital technologies in high-performance sports.

WINTER SCHOOL DIGISPORT : SPEAKERS ANNOUNCEMENT

Antoine Falisse, postdoctoral researcher in bioengineering at Stanford University and co-developer of OpenCap.ai, will lead a conference at the DIGISPORT 2024 Winter School. He will talk about OpenCap, an open-source software that provides its users with instant detailed analysis of their movement and posture from video data, without requiring specific skills or advanced equipment.

In this talk, he will go over the methods and validation studies he conducted, and present a series of applications related to sports performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. He will highlight strengths and limitations of the system and share thoughts for future directions.

Return in pictures on the DIGISPORT & Engie Open Nantes Atlantique partnership

From October 27th to November 2nd, 2024, as part of the partnership between DIGISPORT and the Engie Open Nantes Atlantique, our PhD student Simon Ozan and the M2S Laboratory took the opportunity to collect data on the impact of fatigue and pressure on serving in tennis under real-world conditions, using cameras placed all around the court. A major first for a professional tournament!

Over 2,000 serves were analyzed, providing Simon with enough data to finalize his DIGISPORT thesis.

They also had the chance to present their project to all the tournament volunteers, followed by a discussion session.

A big congratulations to the entire team at the Engie Open Nantes Atlantique for this wonderful event !

WINTER SCHOOL DIGISPORT : SPEAKERS ANNOUNCEMENT

Steffi Colyer, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Biomechanics from the University of Bath, will present her research applying markerless motion capture to unobtrusively obtain performance- and/or injury-relevant information in various sports including tennis, badminton and bob-skeleton.

This talk will outline the process of extracting motion from images, highlighting both the utility and the limitations of markerless approaches that must be considered before such technologies are adopted. In relation to different applied sport research problems, this talk will present markerless solutions to enable detailed biomechanical analyses to be conducted outside of the laboratory in normal training and competition settings.
